Band 6.5 IELTS Essay

It is true that children today play very violent games and many correlate it with the increase in violence and crime in most major cities of the world but in my opinion I don’t think the play played by children is the reason for increased violence. I think both are very separate and exclusive of each other. They don’t influence each other. For us to know whether or not they influence each other, first let us examine them individually taking time as the changing parameter.

Today Children play online games which are violent in nature in the sense that they fight with each other in the virtual world or race cars or build an army to fight against one another, all in the imaginary setting. These games can be addictive in nature and may lead to the child being glued to the computer screen and avoid all other learning which is necessary for a young growing mind. Playing video games all day can affect the child adversely. He/She will show lethargy, will become a recluse with no actual human interaction, will face difficulty in interacting in the real world. It would also lead to obesity from sitting all day at one position and cause other health problems at a young age.

Today we see an increased rate of violence and crime more than ever. This is happening due to overpopulation. Overpopulation leads to lesser resources allocated to an individual which leads to competition and most of the time, it gets violent. Overpopulation also leads to increased unemployment which leads to more and more people unemployed. Unemployed people take desperate measures like committing crime or theft, to meet their basic needs.

So we see that Violent online games and increased violence are little correlation between them as the real reason for the spike in the number of crimes is due to overpopulation and unemployment.

With rapid digital transformation, everyday there’s a new and better video game available for children. Today’s kids no longer go out to play with their peers on the playground, they rather sit at home with their gadgets and play with their peers virtually. Since they spend hours in front of the screen playing violent games where there is killing, bombing, car crashes and other violent acts, it does affect their behaviour severely.

We need to understand that youthful minds are impressionable and they adapt to certain behaviour easily and make it a habit by imitating them. And violent games are one such instance which influence them greatly because they get hooked to it easily and enjoy playing such games for hours together. Yes, sometimes parents prefer that their kids stay at home and play online games so that they can keep an eye on them, but it usually blows out of proportion and soon the parents do not know how to get their kids out of this habit which is impacting their character and behaviour negatively.

Violence and crime seem to have increased more than ever and today we see more adolescents committing crime and engaging in violence more than ever. Today's generation has gotten aggressive and out of control. And many studies suggest that this display of behaviour usually happens when a child is exposed to violence from a young age, so it is a deep-seated repetitive intake of violence and its outcome. The one answer to this is the constant exposure to violent video games which in most cases are unmonitored by parents, as most parents aren’t that expert in technology to understand it’s adverse effects.

In recent times, there has been news circulating about how children behave violently when parents try to restrict them from playing such games and there has also been news about how there are teenagers acting out aggressively when denied something, and in most cases their behaviour is almost a mimic of what these violent game characters. They forget the thin line between what is real and imaginary, which leads to unintentional crimes and putting people’s life at risk.

We need to understand the consequences and find solutions by moderating and monitoring such violent games. Because, it is on us to make this world a better place to live in.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

In major metropolitan cities, we’ve seen a spike in the number of crimes committed in recent times. One important thing which we need to understand about major cities is that they are the ones to experience the technological advancements firsthand and also it is majorly this population group which has the purchasing power and knowledge to get the best digital devices to make their lives easier and smoother. Now, technology is sometimes considered as a necessary evil, which by all means is true, as we see certain negative effects of it, especially in the young population.

To keep up with the fast paced life, today even school going children have expensive gadgets at their disposal as it is necessary for their studies, as everything has shifted to the online mode. Such gadgets pique their curiosity and they start exploring & getting hooked to it.And before they know, they are introduced to violent games like PubG, ManHunt, Call of Duty and others, and soon they get glued to their phones, virtually playing the entire day. Teenagers spend the maximum number of hours playing violent games per day, as per study. Adolescence is a state of mind which needs to be handled carefully, as during this time every individual goes through a lot of changes emotionally and physically. They often act out and get into a vicious cycle of negative habits which can have an adverse effect on their lives.

When children are exposed to such violent games regularly and they engage in it actively, it makes them aggressive and they start thinking that the solution is to get violent or to thrash the other person or the hurdle in front. This reaction gets so in-built in their system that this becomes a natural reaction to everything that happens around them, which increases violence and crimes in major cities as most youngsters get swayed by these games and compels them to do something which is criminal in nature. It also messes with their concentration and focus, which makes it difficult for them to do any work. When parents see such behavioural change in their children, they must immediately take action and help them understand the reality of the situation.

It can be difficult for young people to understand why certain things should be restricted, so the adults need to be patient and calmly help them out, before it’s too late.
