Band 7 IELTS Answer

The first chart displays the percentages of households in one country that had electrical appliances between 1920 and 2019. On the other hand, the second graph depicts how much time families in that country spent performing housework during the same time period.

During this time span, ownership of all three appliances increased, with refrigerators seeing the most growth. While this was happening, less time was being spent on chores. In 1920, washing machines were the most widespread of the three electrical appliances, with 40% of households owning one. With a slight decline in 1980, this percentage then increased to almost 75% in 2019.

Vacuum cleaners were owned by over one-third of households in 1920. Even though ownership increased continuously, it took until 2000 for it to reach 100%. In 1920, nearly no families had a refrigerator. More than 70% of families owned a washing machine, which gradually but steadily climbed until 2019. There were scarcely any families at that time without a refrigerator or vacuum cleaner. It is interesting to note that families' ownership of electric appliances increased.

So, their need for undertaking home chores such as cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes decreased significantly. However, ownership grew quickly, and by 1980, every home had one. In contrast, between 1920 and 1980, the amount of time spent on housework decreased considerably from 50 to 15 hours per week. They used to work 50 hours a week doing such work in 1920, but that number dropped to 20 hours in 1960 and 10 hours in 2019. After then, it only slightly decreased to little more than 10 hours per week in 2019.

Band 6.5 IELTS Answer

The first line graph depicts how electrical appliance ownership in households in a country changed over a century beginning in 1920. The second chart shows how it has changed the time spent on home work per week by citizens in this country. As a predisposition, as households' possession of more electrical devices increased, their demand for housework decreased dramatically.

In 1920, four out of ten homes had washing machines, while only 30% of houses in this country had vacuum cleaners, as seen in the graph. At that time, refrigerators were a rare type of electric equipment. Despite a steady growth in ownership, it took until 2000 for it to reach 100%. Almost no families owned refrigerators in 1920. Up until 2019, more over 70% of households had a washing machine, and that number rose gradually but steadily.

After two decades, however, refrigerator ownership skyrocketed, with nearly half of all families owning one of these three electric appliances. More families began to purchase such machines. Also, by the beginning of the twenty-first century, practically all households had refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. More over 70% of families possessed a washing machine, which continuously climbed until 2019. At that period, almost no family did not own a refrigerator or a vacuum cleaner.

It's noteworthy to observe that as households acquired more electric equipment, the necessity for manual labor around the house decreased. The tasks of cleaning, cooking, and washing clothes were reduced dramatically. In 1920, they put in 50 hours a week on this activity, but by 1960, it had dropped to 20 hours, and by 2019, it was down to 10.
