Each unit gives idioms, meanings, examples, and plenty of exercises. It contains only idioms, not slang or colloquial idioms. Some of these idioms are a little dated, but the majority are well worth learning.

Idioms Selection

The 1,000 plus idioms which are worked on in this book were all selected from those identified as significant based on computer searches of huge language databases. These databases show the idioms that have been used by native speakers of English in conversations, newspapers, novels, and many other contexts. The idioms selected are all also to be found in the Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms where additional examples and usage notes will also be found.

Books Organisation

This book comprises 60 two pages of units. The left-side page represents the idioms that are worked on in the unit. There are explanations of the meaning of each idiom, it has an example of it in use, and also appropriate usage with special notes attached to it. The right-side page cross-checks that you have understood the information that was provided on the left-side page by giving you a series of exercises that consists of IELTS practice questions that the material just presented. Each of the exercises pay particular attention to cross-checking your understanding of the idioms and how you have used them. This is because it is important for most learners to be able to actively use the idioms.

The units of the book are organized into three sections. These are as follows:

  • Idioms to talk about: In which groups idioms according to the topic area that they are used to talk about. Thus, to be snowed under [to have an enormous amount of work to do is included in Unit 25, Work.]
  • Idioms from the topic area: This section talks about the groups’ idioms according to the image they are based on. Thus, hit the roof [react in a very angry way] is included in Unit 41, Houses and household objects
  • Idioms using these keywords: In this section, the groups’ idioms are according to keywords in them. For instance, Unit 48 deals with a set of idioms based on the word head.
