By Punishing Murderers With the Death Penalty the Society is Also Guilty of Committing Murder IELTS Writing Task 2 consists of three sample answers provided below. Topic: By punishing murderers with the death penalty, society is also guilty of committing murder. Therefore, life in prison is a better punishment for murderers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Punishment is an opportunity that is given to a person to bring a change in them. It is given when they have committed some criminal activity which is not accepted by the laws of the society. Capital punishment or death penalty is given to people who have committed henious crimes like murder. Many people believe that providing death penalty is justified as they have comitted murder. They do not deserve to live. While others think that every person should be given a chance to reform themselves. Therefore, life in prison is better than killing them. Society does not always have the right to kill someone. There are instances where some people are a threat to society.

Murders are usually committed by three kinds of people. One who does it for vengeance, one who does it in self protection and the third is one who does it at the heat of the moment. The third kind of people usually repents for what they have done. Considering this, the punishment also cannot be similar for all the three kinds, though they have committed the same crime. For the first kind, people who commit murder for vengence or for pleasure, should be treated harshly. They do not have the realization that they are taking the life of a person. The second group who commits murder for self defence should be considered while being punished. They have done this for self defense. The third group is when people get angry and commit a crime. Hence, providing capital punishment is not justified. The prison is a place where people can redeem themselves. A crime done to save themselves or at the heat of the moment cannot be the reason for capital punishment. They should be kept in prison so that they can understand the crime they have committed. Someone who has killed many people and does this again and again can be provided capital punishment as they are a damger to the society. However, other people who has comitted murder deserve a second chance so that they can change themselves. Prison is the best place to do so.

Capital punishment means killing a criminal. This type of punishments are provided to criminals who has committed heinous crimes like murder, rape. Some say that capital punishment should be provided to murders and some people deny this. There are always 2 sides in a discussion. People who deny that capital punishment should not be provided thinks that every person should be given a second chance. The state and the society have no right to kill them. It is not justified that the state is doing the same crime for which the person is convicted. Life cannot be created by society and law, hence, it cannot be taken away also. People commit murder due to may reasons. The court must look into those before providing the sentence of capital punishment. There are incidents where the murder was commited due to self defence. In such scenarios, capital punishment is not the solution. The person who commited murder due to self defence should be given time to repent as they have not done it on purpose. Martin Luther King Jr. said that ‘If we do an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, we will be a blind and toothless nation’. The court can provide punishment to the people who have commited mureder. They can be sentenced to prison for life or for few years depending on the severity of the murder. This will at least keep them alive. The criminals will have the time to understand the crime. When they are seperated from the outside world as a punishment, they will understand the meaning of life. This will help improve themselves and be a better person.

The job of a punishment and prison is to rectify the person as a human being. The person who has commited a crime like murder should be aware of what he has done. Taking the life of a person is not easy. Anyone who has done it should either be mentally unfit or has done it out of anger. There are some incidents where a murder happened due to self defence or an accident. All these scenarios cannot be seen equally. Hence, the punishment also cannot be the same. If a criminal is convicted of murder, providing capital punishment and killing that person might not give him a chance to rectify himself. The authorities are killing a person in the name of punishment. The irony being that he is being provided a punishment similar to the crime he has committed. Some people believe that such criminals cannot belong to society and hence, should be given capital punishment. However, some do not believe this and say that life in prison is a better punishment. This will at least allow them to repent on their crime. Taking the life of a person is not a justified punishment as the person was not given time to understand the crime he has committed. Killing the murderers will not bring the victim back. Hence, the criminals should be kept behind the bars for life. There are people who believe that the length of a sentence should depend on the severity of the crime that the person has committed. The courts and the authorities should look into the reasons and the circumstances of the murder. Living in jail for the rest of their life could make them realize what they are missing in the outside world. Some people believe that life in jail can damage and destroy the criminal's life. They will have nothing left if they ever come outside except ignorance and pain. Hence, it is better to kill them while they are in prison. Capital punishment is not the only way to serve justice to the victims.
