Buildings Such as Offices and Schools Have Open-Space design Instead of Separate Rooms IELTS Writing Task 2 consists of three sample answers provided below. The task requires the candidates to provide a tentative and argumentative answer to the question. The sample answers comprise two parts: Introduction and body. The introduction is a brief description of the topic. The body contains argumentative statements and tentative answers to support the test-taker's perspective.

Nowadays, some buildings such as offices and schools have open-space design instead of separate rooms. Why is it so? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Yes , it is seen in recent times that many of the buildings such as offices and schools opt for open space designs rather than including separate rooms for the employees. Many of the modern day startups and offices choose this concept of open space buildings because of various positive impacts or developments. Some of the reasons are discussed briefly in my article below.

The first and the foremost reason behind shifting the architectural designs of the office and school buildings to open spaces is that it is very much cost effective. Providing separate rooms for each and every employee greatly increases the overall expenditure of the organization. This is one of the advantages of open space designs.

Secondly, people working in an open space are seen to be more productive than those working in separate rooms. The four walls of the separate rooms give a very closed and depressing vibe to the employee which is not in case of open spaces. In open space designs, the employees remain in touch with the outside environment which greatly boosts their working abilities. Thirdly, people working in open space designs gain the facility to interact closely with their associates or colleagues and work in an organised manner with each other which greatly enhances their productivity. The employees get to know various viewpoints on the development of a particular project while working in open spaces. In an overall sense, these things really help to boost the productivity of the organization.

So not only do I truly believe this to be a positive development, but I think the modern day startups, offices and schools should be encouraged to do so.

Nowadays, it is seen in most of the urban areas and localities that the offices and schools choose open space designs rather than separate room designs. In my opinion, there are both pros and cons regarding this trend. Some of the pros and cons that are linked with this trend are discussed in my article below .

Yes, it is true that open space designs have various positive impacts on the overall development of the organization. In these types of open spaces, the employees get to interact more with each other . They become easily comfortable with each other while working on a particular project. Again , the natural environment of the open space designs boosts their mental immunity and mental peace. This again impacts positively on the efficiency of the employees. These are some of the positive impacts of open space buildings which are seen to be absent in buildings with seperate rooms.

On the other hand, instead of having so many positive impacts, open space buildings possess some negative impacts also. The most negative impact of open space designs is probably the effect on the privacy of the employees. There are many people in the corporate industries who work more efficiently in their private spaces. They can't work properly among groups of people. They need their own space and time to work effectively. The hustle- bustle of the open spaces may affect their inner state of peace and consistency which may affect the overall productivity. They may get disturbed by the constant noise and typing sounds of the computers and thus may become less efficient.

So these are some of the positive and negative impacts of opting for open space designs rather than separate room designs . But it is important to mention that the positive impacts are more than the negative impacts. So on an average sense, open space designs of the buildings of offices and schools may be regarded as a positive development.

In today's world , open space designs are seen to be more popular than the designs with separate rooms. Due to its cost effective nature, many start ups and offices have followed this trend. Though the office Administration or the company heads regard this to be a positive impact because of various reasons, opting for open space designs have many negative impacts also. I will discuss both below.

Firstly, the open spaces make the employees more in touch with the environment which induces their working abilities. The constant interaction among the employees makes the project more productive due to the application of many viewpoints. But this positive impact may again backfire to some of the employees. There are many employees who don't like to work in open spaces. They can't work efficiently among large groups of people. This may induce stress and anxiety in them . Again some employees with social anxiety issues may also find it difficult to work in those open spaces. The constant noise and sound produced may agitate them and cause negative impact on their mental behaviour. These things may eventually impact negatively on the productivity or efficiency of the organisation. Another negative impact of open space designs is the distraction. As in open spaces, large numbers of individuals or employees remain in only one confined space , distraction becomes a very important issue. While working on a particular project, they don't get disturbed by other employees as often seen in open space designs. Options for open space designs have both positive and negative impacts. In my opinion, the office heads or leaders should ask for recommendations from their employees before choosing this trend, because eventually, the ground employees will have the direct impact from the architectural designs of the office spaces.
