Topic: Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model Answer 1:

At this time, there's hardly any country that has got no crime. The rate of crime is increasing day by day and has caused a serious problem to deal with across the globe. This has led to fear in the minds of innocent people and has forced the law to give stronger punishment to those who are committing it. Many people believe that increasing the sentence of a prisoner can be the solution to reducing the rate of crime while others believe in other alternatives to reduce crime.

To start with, many people believe that there are advantages of long sentencing to a prisoner. Firstly a prisoner can understand the mistakes he committed during his time in prison. For example, he can start a new life by availing of free education from the government inside the prison and learning productive activities. This will help him to get motivated and he can start an honest life by proper means of earning. Another important aspect of a long prison is that, if the sentence is too long then the person will think twice before committing a crime. The intensity of the punishment will generate fear in his mind.

However, some people think long prison sentences can hurt the mind of the prisoner and have adverse effects on him. Inside the prison, they get to stay with other prisoners which may motivate them to plan things worse. Hence staying long with other prisoners will not change the character of the person, but give rise to more serious issues. The only solution for this issue is to give separate schooling and proper counseling. The government needs to give jobs to the unemployed as most crime is committed due to a lack of financial stability. With proper opportunities and jobs, one can feel positivity in their mind which will keep negative thoughts away.

In the end, I believe that a longer sentence can reduce crime because of its intensity, but the government should also take steps to stop the crime before it gets committed by providing proper jobs and facilities to the people.

Model Answer 2:

People have different views regarding the reduction of crimes. Some think long tenure can be the solution for it and some prefer other solutions for it. Both ways have different outcomes.

On one hand, there are certain benefits of long prison sentences. The criminals will not commit a crime when they realize that they have to spend a long time in prison in a harsh way. Moreover, the citizens will feel safe and secure when the offender will be behind bars. For example, many people used to be afraid while passing from the Araku Jungle near Andhra Pradesh due to the heists performed by the dacoits, so the local people who used to pass nearby from the jungle or tourists were very worried. When the dacoits were caught by the police and put behind bars, the people felt secure and comfortable while passing from that forest.

On the other hand, there are people who believe in other ways rather than giving long prison sentences. The offender can be put in a rehabilitation center. The police should maintain the law and order more strictly. The prisoner should be given vocational training so that he can earn a living after getting out of prison. There are also counseling sessions inside the prison and there are reports of offenders becoming good after the counseling and in return getting their sentence reduced by the government.

In conclusion, I think the government should intervene more in helping society to become better and thus reduce the negativity in people's minds.

Model Answer 3:

These days crimes are hitting an unbelievable high rate. The news channels and dailies are flooded with the commencement of illegal acts. With the advancement of technology, the crime rate has increased for its loopholes. Now the offender does not need to be present physically to commit a crime. In this topic, I would like to throw some light on increasing the sentence of prison and other alternative ways to reduce crime.

There are instances where prisoners commit more serious crimes after their release from jail. I believe the punishment should be as harder and longer in the same context of the crime. Most prisoners do not learn from their mistakes if the intensity of the punishment is low. They do the same violation against the law even after serving the penalty. Thus the sentence should be long and hard enough to reduce the rate of crime.

However, some people agree with others on performing other alternatives to reduce the rate of crime. Here the government has a big role to play. The prisoners who can be re-educated by numerous penalties and punishment by getting trained and skilled must be under strict government observation. Sometimes they do catch nasty habits from their mates inside the jail. Overall the government needs to focus more attention on unemployment. This will scrape the major reasons for performing criminal acts.

Therefore, in my opinion, the government should punish the offenders according to the severity of the crime, and punishment should be given after proper investigation and thinking of alternative ways to improve the person.
