Average Monthly Temperatures and The Average Number of Hours of Sunshine Per Year IELTS Writing Task 1 sample answers are given below. Topic: The graph and table below show the average monthly temperatures and the average number of hours of sunshine per year in three major cities. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 6.5 Answer

The above line graph provides clear depiction on changes of temperature in each month during the year in 3 different cities including London, New York and Sydney. The table below presents using the unit of hour the average time of sunshine per year is presented. Overall, it is clearly visible that New York and London have a similar trend on the monthly temperatures. However, the annual hours have a large scale of differences .

From the given graph, it can be clearly seen that London and New York in the beginning of the year have a low temperature at about 5-10 degrees. On the other hand, Sydney has a high temperature of 26 degrees at the beginning of the year. However, the trend tends to reverse in March for all the three countries. Accordingly, New York becomes the hottest city with 29 degrees. While London has 23 degrees in March and Sydney has a temperature of 17 degrees. However, in the middle of July it can be seen that the temperatures return back almost to the same level during the initial years for all the three countries.

Moving to the table, taking into consideration the hours of sunshine, it can be seen that New York has the highest hour of sunshine at 2535 per year. Significantly, it can be seen that although temperatures for Sydney differ considerably from New York, the hours of sunshine is almost the same at 2473. On the other hand, London ranks the least with sunshine hours which is placed at 1158 as mentioned in the table.

Band 7 Answer

The given line graph and the table provide clear illustrations regarding data on average temperatures and yearly hours of sunshine in London, New York and Sydney.

In overviewing the information, the temperature patterns for London and New York stand to be similar, having the hottest temperatures. However, for Sydney the highest average temperature seems to occur in January when New York and London have colder temperatures. On the contrary, the sunshine hours per year for New York and Sydney remains almost equivalent while London has the least hours of sunshine.

In finding more details regarding the monthly changes in temperature it can be seen that in London and New York the summers are warmer and winters are colder. The average temperatures in London and New York peak at 23 degrees and 29 degrees in July respectively. Significantly, Sydney shows the lowest average temperatures in July reaching just over 15 degrees. Whereas January is the month when Sydney experiences the warmest weather with 25 degrees and winters are as low as 15 degrees. New York’s temperatures are on an average of around 5 degrees in December/January which shows a decreasing trend. For London as well, the temperature is at 12 degrees. As far as sunshine duration is concerned, New York and Sydney have relatively similar averages of 2,535 and 2,473 hours per year respectively. However, the annual average sunshine hours across London can be seen to be much lower at 1,180 hours per year.

Band 8 Answer

The above depiction regarding the temperatures of three different major cities and the sunshine hours has been depicted using a line graph and the table. The included three cities are – London, New York and Sydney. It can be seen that temperatures are similar for London and New York, but the sunshine hours of New York find similarities with Sydney.

It is evident that when Sydney experiences summer and warmer conditions, New York and London experience winter. Furthermore, when New York and London experience the summer season, Sydney tends to remain colder. Considering the details of temperature, Sydney has 25 degrees at the time of first quarter or during January. On the other hand, New York is the coldest at this time with temperatures hovering around 5 degree Celsius. New York however, is hotter than London in the second and third quarters of the year with temperatures reaching as high as 30 degree Celsius in July. In London, July is also one of the hottest times of year with temperatures increasing as high as 24 degree Celsius. However, July is the coldest month in Sydney with temperatures reaching as low as 15 degree Celsius. When the temperature in New York and London starts decreasing in the fourth quarter of the year, the temperature in Sydney increases. In case of sunshine hours as mentioned in the table. New York receives the highest number of sunshine hours with 2535 hours annually. This is followed by Sydney that receives 2473 hours every year while London gets only about 1180 hours of sunshine in a year.
