Medbury Portrait Award

We invite submissions of entry for the Medbury Portrait Award, the most prestigious art prize for young Art graduates. Artists who are eligible are UK residents who have graduated from a national Visual Arts degree programme within the 12-month period before the opening of the exhibition, which is May 6. The Award, which was established in 1961 by the will of the late Thomas James Medbury, is held annually to award an emerging portrait artist of outstanding promise to help them become established in the profession. This year's prize is valued at £80,000.

How to apply for the award:

Applications for entry will be accepted online only and entries close at midnight on February 24. Last year, the Award received almost 5,000 entries. The popularity of the Award has led to changes in the judging process to allow for the large numbers of submissions to be managed. We will no longer be receiving unsolicited entries for the award. Instead, there will be a preliminary selection process based on submission of a digital image of the proposed entry. Up to forty paintings will be selected and these finalists will be contacted to submit their paintings.

To start the initial process of the award, artists are required to supply:

  • An online application.
  • A digital image of the painting (max 2 MB)
  • Details of the dimensions and medium used for the portrait.
  • A written statement from the artist about the work of 250 words or less.
  • A signed agreement from the sitter for the portrait (if it is not a self-portrait) that they agree to the painting being exhibited and reproductions of it being used in publicity material.
  • A declaration that the artist has read the Terms and Conditions of the Medbury Portrait Award (a box to be ticked on the online application).

Finalists whose paintings hang in the exhibition are also eligible for the £2,000 People's Choice Award, which is decided by the public vote when they attend the exhibition and will be announced at the closure of the exhibition on June 10.
