Amit Turning his First Failed Attempt to an IELTS Score 8 in Second Attempt

Every day we come across numerous failure stories of IELTS aspirants. These stories state how they failed to achieve their target IELTS score in the first or even second attempt. While some students also come out with flying colors on their result days. Since IELTS is an English language proficiency test and is mostly taken by non-native English speakers, the struggle is pretty intense. We often hear students stating how they find the speaking and writing sections troublesome. With the universities, and immigration centers mandating high IELTS scores, it has become a prerequisite for the candidates to achieve or surpass that.

Along with the failure stories, we also come across certain success stories that work as a booster for many IELTS aspirants. This success story is of Amit who has gone through a tremendous amount of preparation and hard work and ultimately resulted in his dream IELTS score. Increasing your IELTS band score by 1 point in each section of the IELTS syllabus is a huge task. When you have a proper preparation plan, despite that you fail in your first attempt, it breaks you down. That is what happened with Amit, but he overcame that fear and had his IELTS band score rise by 1 point.

There are plenty of students who comprehend the IELTS exam to be that of the high school English test. They misinterpret the listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections to be synonymous with what they learned back in school. Amit mistook the exam for the same. But here is the twist, the IELTS exam pattern is designed in a way to test different skills at the same time. It is no “normal English exam” that Amit failed to anticipate. This is why he didn’t consider enrolling in an IELTS coaching or consulting an expert during his preparation.

After gearing up for his preparation plan for the next attempt, Amit understood that the problem area is in his IELTS writing and speaking sections (the most common problem areas of non-native speakers). Amit created a balance between his strengths and weaknesses. He firstly took a diagnostic test to ascertain the present score he could obtain. He followed certain IELTS preparation tips for both writing and speaking sections.

For IELTS Writing:

  • Amit started with IELTS writing task 2 as that continued 66% of the total IELTS writing score. The IELTS writing task 2 is also longer than the first one with the 250-word count, and that requires more effort. Amit started practicing from the IELTS writing practice papers and practiced different types of topics.
  • He started learning new vocabulary words and putting them in the essays. Examiners are always searching for polished essays with rich vocabulary.
  • He concentrated on following the standard English conventions. He wrote in a formal manner, avoided all kinds of abbreviations, and also wrote in only the third person.
  • He distributed the essays into proper structures that included: Topic development, supporting sentences, pieces of evidence.
  • He followed the IELTS writing marking criteria blindly: Task response, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical range and accuracy.

For IELTS Speaking:

  • He started with daily practicing of IELTS speaking rather than occasional conversations
  • He started communicating with family members in English to improve the fluency
  • He practiced not pausing while speaking as that is not what the examiner needs
  • He started replying in full sentences rather than only ‘yes’ or ‘no’ or one-word answers. Examiners always prefer answers that are complete.
  • He started utilizing the 1 minute IELTS preparation time allotted during the IELTS speaking part 2.
